Frequently Asked Questions |
Is Virtual Reality Chat (VRC) free?VRC is free for non-commercial use. VRC is the result of an open-source project hosted at sourceforge (see here). The source code of VRC is licensed under LGPL, however we use some dependencies with own licensing conditions which allow free usage of VRC only for non-commercial purpose.
What is the Walk-Through mode about? The Walk-Through mode is meant to be a teaser for the VRC Island. In this mode you are not connected to the VRC server, so no voice is available. You can take a look on the Island, but the IRC protocoll is still available in this mode (see below).
What is the "IRC connect" button on chat box for?VRC supports an own textual chat and the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) protocol. By clicking on the button you can connect to an IRC server and join as many channels as you wish by typing "/join #<channel name>" in chat box. In Walk-Through mode, only IRC protocol is available.
Can I setup an own VRC server?Yes, you can. The VRC installation package comes with both, server and client. Everyone can setup an own VRC server. Don't forget to open the game server and voice control ports in your firewall (see serverPort and voicePort settings in gamesettings.cfg file).
I have trouble with voice chat. What can I do? Make sure that UDP port 31200 is not blocked by your firewall. This is the default control channel for voice chat. The voice channel is automatically established when players come close to each other. Establishing the voice channel fails sometimes if the user is behind particular NAT/firewall routers. VRC has been tested against many routers without any problems, though. If you encounter any problems try to use the Port Forwarding mechanism by enabling it in VRC's Options menu (Sound/Voice) and setup your router/firewall appropriately. Take care that several computers having voice chat problems behind the same router must set different forwarded ports in VRC and the router.
I get lower frame rate when I enable dynamic shadows. Why? Depending on your graphics card, dynamic shadows may cause a performance drop. Currently, VRC does not provide any option to ballance the dynamic shadow quality against performance.
On Linux, I have trouble with microphone input device. What can I do?Unfortunately, sometimes it is not that easy to get the microphone input device up and running on Linux (depending on your hardware and Linux distribution). You may ask experts in IRC channels, e.g. #linux or your Linux distribution channel such as #ubuntu on freenode.
